What is Scottish Biomedical?
We are a privately owned, drug discovery services company focused on early phase drug research and discovery. We employ 40 staff on a full-time basis, of whom around 50% have PhDs. In addition, we retain approximately 50 researchers in various external university laboratories to support our milestone-driven research and discovery projects.
What does Scottish Biomedical deliver to its clients?
By offering drug discovery services to support all aspects of drug research and discovery, we deliver validated drug targets, hits-to-leads and potential therapeutic compounds. All deliverables and costs are agreed up-front with our clients.
What makes Scottish Biomedical different?
Unlike our competitor companies, we do not offer specialised services in any one particular area, but rather can offer the full complement of drug discovery services to support full development programmes. In addition, rather than simply offering operational support, we provide our clients with intellectual rigour and expertise in project design. What this means is that Scottish Biomedical will provide strongly supported recommendations regarding drug targets and assay development. Therefore, we can assist our clients in designing the best possible drug-discovery programmes which will maximise the likelihood of success.
We also have an exceptional global network of contacts with world-leading academic experts. Where this will add value to a programme, we can, with the agreement of our client, recruit them onto the Scientific Advisory Board in a consultative capacity for a particular project.
Scottish Biomedical’s own unique Lead Generation Library is also at our client’s disposal.
Who owns the Intellectual Property (IP) generated from our projects?
All IP generated by our programmes can be 100% owned by our clients if they desire.
What is the scope of a research programme within Scottish Biomedical?
Scottish Biomedical’s business model is extremely flexible. We can deliver full-scale drug-discovery programmes, which run through the full pre-clinical drug discovery process:
- target identification and/or validation
- genomics / proteomics
- cell biology
- pharmacology
- medicinal chemistry
- compound delivery
Alternatively, the approach to our projects can be modular. This means that our client can dip into any one or more of the above ‘modules’, as they require. All costs for each module are agreed up-front, which gives our clients the opportunity to opt out at any stage should their strategy or budget demand it.
How are drug discovery programmes managed?
A dedicated project manager is assigned to each programme. This ensures that milestones, results and IP are delivered to the client on time and within budget. Communication planning and frequency of reporting is agreed in advance with the client.
Can our clients' staff participate in research programmes?
Yes. Many of our programmes have involved the secondment of client staff to our laboratories. In fact, on occasion they have been awarded their PhDs while working with us.
